The Outsider by Paul Slade Smith
Directed by Melanie Jones
When the Governor of a small state is suddenly removed from office, his Lieutenant Governor, Ned Newley, has to take his place. Ned’s impressive ability is hidden by his inability to speak in front of anyone other than his Chief of Staff, Dave Riley. To correct the disaster of his “unspeakable first TV appearance,” Dave brings in professional pollsters, consultants, & a most inept temporary assistant.
What happens when they are all together makes for a humorous comedy that skewers politics and celebrates democracy.
Cast of Characters
Paige Caldwell Female. Smart, confident woman with a professional’s view of politics. To her, each discussion is a contest to be won.
Dave Riley Male. Chief of Staff for the new Governor. Smart but endearingly earnest and naïve when it comes to politics.
Louise Peakes Female. A temp hired as the new Governor’s executive assistant. Personable, likable, & entirely inept. Her friendliness & the confident way she looks people in the eye, would make anyone think “I’d vote for her.”
Ned Newley Male. The new Governor. Impressive ability but total lack of confidence in himself. He is a man waiting for permission to enter a room that he is already in.
Arthur Vance Male. A most experienced successful political consultant! He is overbearing & confident of his own opinions. A showman with 100% excitement about success with those he grooms.
Rachel Parsons Female. A TV reporter who looks good on-air. A straightforward journalist, who is honest and inquisitive. She’s seen enough to be cynical but resorts to humor instead.
A.C. Petersen Male. TV camera man. Working class guy who prefers silence to stupidity and would rather not be seen or interact with anyone.
